Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, the FDP’s parliamentary group chair for the European Parliament’s Defence Committee, urged caution, advising that the latest announcements from Washington regarding a partial withdrawal of US troops from Germany and the cancellation of US medium-range missile stations must be taken seriously. The FDP politician criticized the CDU’s leader, Friedrich Merz, for allegedly lacking sufficient political prudence.
Speaking to “Spiegel”, Strack-Zimmermann stated that believing these announcements are serious is necessary because the troop withdrawal does not appear to be of military-strategic nature. Instead, she suggested it is clearly driven by the current US President’s motivation-a desire, in Merz’s words, to “show the middle finger”.
Addressing Europe at large, she noted that while Europeans are making good progress in compensating for existing US capabilities, they require much more time. More critical, she emphasized, is the need to reduce national interests within the continent. She also criticized Germany, stating that under Merz’s leadership, the country remains overly focused on its own needs rather than the interests of the whole of Europe.
When asked how the German federal government should respond to the recent developments from Washington, the chairwoman replied that Mr. Merz needs to consider the consequences of his own words before speaking out. While asserting that Germany should maintain a confident stance toward Trump, she advised him, more importantly, to follow through on commitments. She reminded him that Germany possesses sufficient funds and must uphold its obligations.
This commentary follows a period where Merz had already criticized President Trump for his lack of strategic planning during the Iraq War, a criticism that reportedly caused significant discord within the White House itself.
