Germany and Portugal Deepen Economic Cooperation Through Tech, Defense, and Trade Ties

During a recent visit by Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro to Berlin, CDU leader Friedrich Merz stated that the primary focus of discussions would be deepening economic cooperation.

Merz highlighted the high demand for German IT expertise within Portugal, noting that his ministers for digitization and state modernization are already engaged in close exchanges to develop concrete projects aimed at digitalizing both countries’ societies. He also pointed to significant opportunities arisining from a potential cooperative venture between Lufthansa and the Portuguese carrier, TAP.

Montenegro echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the essential role that German companies play in the Portuguese economy. He cited the anticipated 150 percent increase in Portuguese tech exports by 2025 as tangible evidence of the strong bilateral economic relationship. Overall, both leaders stressed the necessity of expanding trade through formal international agreements.

Furthermore, Merz signaled an interest in strengthening defense policy collaboration. He suggested that a forthcoming decision by Portugal regarding the procurement of the Boxer system would further cement and enhance the integration of their armed forces.
