According to a poll conducted by the Institute Insa and reported by the newspaper “Bild”, a majority of German citizens would prefer the current “black-red” federal government to end before its scheduled conclusion in early 2029. Specifically, 49 percent of respondents indicated that the coalition between the Union and the SPD should terminate prematurely. Contrary to this, 32 percent wished for the black-red coalition to continue governing. The remaining 19 percent were unable or unwilling to express an opinion on the matter.
Further analysis found a significant regional divide in the sentiment. East Germans demonstrated a much stronger preference for an early end to the governing coalition compared to their Western counterparts. In the East, 57 percent of respondents desired the black-red government to end its mandate prematurely, while only 29 percent wanted it to continue. In contrast, 47 percent of those surveyed in West Germany opted for the coalition’s early demise, compared to 33 percent who wished for it to remain in power.
The poll was conducted by Insa for “Bild” from May 8th to May 11th, 2026, gathering input from a total of 1,003 eligible voters. Participants were asked the question: “Should the black-red federal government continue governing, or should it separate prematurely and conclude its coalition?”
