Niedersachsen’s Prime Minister, Olaf Lies (SPD), praised the decision by the black-red coalition committee to involve trade unions and employer groups in the federal government’s reform plans. Speaking to “Die Welt” Lies described this move as a positive indication that the federal government intends to closely collaborate with the social partners. He remains optimistic about addressing all future challenges, citing upcoming social reforms and a necessary tax overhaul as key examples. Furthermore, the head of the state government argued that the federal states must also be deeply integrated into the discussions to ensure sufficient majorities within the Bundesrat.
Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD), the mayor of Bremen, also commended the Berlin coalition’s approach. He welcomed the inclusion of the social partners at the negotiating table while the coalition debates essential reforms. Bovenschulte emphasized that while such inclusive processes may lead to discussions and potentially delay the timeline, a reform package that is truly effective in the long term can only be formulated by involving all segments of society.
