Japanese Ambassador to Berlin, Mitsuko Shino, reiterated Japan’s unwavering support for Ukraine while simultaneously issuing a stark warning to China. Shino told reporters that this support serves as a signal not only to Russia but to any nation considering violating territorial integrity. When questioned further, Shino stressed that upholding territorial integrity is of paramount importance to Japan. She specifically referenced Chinese provocations in the East China Sea, where Japanese fighter jets are occasionally tracked by Chinese radar beams. “We repeatedly ask China to cease this behavior. A small misunderstanding could trigger a major disaster” she cautioned. When asked about the delicate balance between economic closeness and security tensions with China, Shino stated, “You cannot change geography. We will continue to be neighbors-and good neighboring requires rules. Territorial integrity is fundamental for all of us”.
