Land State Ministers Draw Union Critiques Over Potential AfD Government Preparations

Alexander Throm, the interior policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has rejected calls coming from state interior ministers to begin preparations for a potential government involvement by the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt. Speaking to the Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers, Throm dismissed the discussions as inappropriate, stating, “I find no value in such public debates. Rather, we must work every day to ensure this scenario does not materialize”.

The controversy arises because polling data suggests the AfD could emerge as the dominant political force in the upcoming state election in Saxony-Anhalt. Following this trend, multiple state interior ministers publicly expressed support over the weekend for preparing for this possible political shift. Their concern is that giving the AfD access to security-relevant information would pose a significant safety risk.
