Heidi Reichinnek, the leader of the left-wing faction, suggested that former Chancellor Angela Merkel would be more suitable for the EU Merit Award than the current CDU Chancellor, Friedrich Merz. Speaking on RTL and ntv shortly before the award ceremony, Reichinnek praised Merkel’s political style and her perceived understanding of the general populace. She noted that she appreciated Merkel’s dry humor and her consistent ability to accept and engage with diverse opinions, calling this a fundamental strength.
Although Reichinnek admitted to holding various criticisms regarding Merkel, she maintained that she made a much better figure than her successor when comparing the two. Furthermore, she highlighted Merkel’s commitment to an open Europe, explicitly stating her rejection of a continent defined by closed borders. According to Reichinnek, this international outlook made Merkel significantly more suitable for the award than the current Chancellor.
The Reichinnek also strongly defended Merkel’s renewed call for negotiating with Russian President Putin in the context of the Ukraine conflict. She stressed that a truly great European leader understands the necessity of diplomacy. She dismissed further militarization and armament efforts as counterproductive, concluding that diplomacy was clearly the necessary path forward.
