The Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday that the number of Bundeswehr soldiers is increasing, albeit in relatively small increments. As of April, the total force had grown by over 3,400 personnel compared to the corresponding month in the previous year, bringing the total number to approximately 185,900 soldiers.
While the total strength only climbed by roughly 500 soldiers compared to the previous month of March, the Ministry called this an “encouraging development”. Officials noted that the typical seasonal variations seen in the first quarter of the year did not negatively affect the overall sustained growth trend.
In terms of manpower flow, there were around 28,800 applications recorded by April 30th, representing a 21% increase compared to the previous year. Furthermore, there were about 9,500 new enlistments, marking an 11% increase year-over-year. Additionally, approximately 13,100 voluntary soldiers and short-term service personnel currently serve in the Bundeswehr-a figure that is 9% higher than the previous year and represents a modest increase of about 400 since March.
Looking ahead, the Bundeswehr’s official strategic goal is to boost its personnel strength to around 203,000 soldiers by the year 2031. This target includes maintaining roughly 186,000 professional soldiers and short-term service personnel.
