Company hiring intentions in Germany showed a slight improvement in May, according to the latest Ifo Employment Barometer reported by Handelsblatt. The indicator value rose to 93.9 points in January, marking the highest figure since July of the previous year.
Klaus Wohlrabe, Chief Statistician at the Munich Ifo Institute, commented to Handelsblatt, stating that the level of restrictive employment plans has eased considerably. However, he cautioned that companies are remaining reserved in their staffing strategies due to ongoing economic fragility and persistent uncertainty. He added that a genuinely sustainable recovery in the job market has yet to materialize.
This barometer is derived from the employment plans of approximately 9,500 companies, spanning the manufacturing, construction, wholesale and retail, and service sectors. The data is calculated monthly for Handelsblatt’s readership.
