The Consumer Advice Association (VZBV) has strongly opposed the extension of the fuel discount. According to Ramona Pop, head of the VZBV, the subsidy failed to meet expectations. She criticized the program, arguing that a substantial portion of the intended relief did not reach consumers but instead flowed into the coffers of oil conglomerates. Pop contended that only under massive public pressure have prices at gas pumps fallen. The VZBV labels the fuel discount as “expensive, inefficient, and vulnerable to ridership effects” and therefore rejects any extension. Instead, the association advocates for targeted and reliable measures, such as direct payments or a reduction in the electricity tax. The energy tax cut on petrol and diesel was originally intended to ease the burden on consumers due to high fuel prices resulting from global conflicts, such as the Iran War. Although the discount is valid until the end of June, the possibility of an extension remains undecided.
