FDP Gains Membership Momentum After Successful Party Conference

The Free Democratic Party (FDP) has recently recorded an increase in its membership numbers. According to the FDP’s notification to the Funke media group, there has been an upward trend of approximately one percent since the party congress held at the end of May. On Monday alone, the FDP reported about 780 new members joining, compared to 80 departures.

FDP Secretary-General Martin Hagen told the Funke newspapers that the party has been feeling positive momentum since Easter, and particularly following the election of its new leadership team. He noted that the decision of many people to join the FDP after the party congress is a source of motivation.

The FDP’s membership has historically fluctuated around the 70,000 mark. It peaked in 2021 with 77,276 members, but fell by nearly 10,000 between then and the end of the ‘traffic light’ coalition government in 2024. One year ago, internal party statements indicated the number was around 69,000, meaning the party is now seeing further growth.

The recent party congress on May 30th and 31st saw current party leader Wolfgang Kubicki secure victory in a competitive election against his spontaneous challenger, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann. Subsequently, the members voted in the three vice-presidents proposed by Kubicki-Henning Höne, Svenja Hahn, and Linda Teuteberg-as well as electing Martin Hagen as the party’s Secretary-General.
