Ahead of the reform summit at the Chancellery, the German Federation of Cities and Municipalities (Deutscher Städte- und Gemeindebund) has strongly called for a spirit of compromise. André Berghegger, the head of the organization, told newspapers of the Funke Media Group, “Now is not the time to insist on maximalist positions. Now is the time to finally deliver.” He stressed that all parties involved must show flexibility and be willing to embrace bold, viable reforms capable of improving Germany’s economic and financial situation. Berghegger warned that local governments find themselves in a precarious situation. Therefore, a genuine financial relief for the municipal level must be a central focus of all reform efforts. “We expect all parties to fulfill their responsibilities and come together now to agree on shared proposals for our country.”
