Defence Minister Quits Over Budget Dispute Amid Growing Security Threats

UK Defence Minister John Healey announced his resignation on Thursday in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He stated that the current defence investment plan was inadequate to ensure the nation’s defence amid increasing global threats. Healey explained that after clarifying his inability to accept a financial agreement that would not provide the “necessary resources” for the naval forces, he felt he had no alternative but to step down.

In his resignation letter, Healey stressed that the “new era of defence” requires significantly greater investment. He noted that the extensive collaboration between various government departments, finalized in January, confirmed the scale of the challenges and the rising demands placed upon the armed forces. However, he further pointed out that despite this acknowledgment, the necessary funds have not been allocated to defend the country “in this time of growing threats.”
