Health Reform Fury: Van Aken Slams Warken’s ‘Social Robbery’ and Demands Wealthy Pay More

Jan van Aken, the head of the Left Party, launched sharp criticism against the healthcare minister’s (CDU) savings package, advocating instead for a greater financial burden on wealthy individuals. In comments given to the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), van Aken demanded that the contribution assessment limit be scrapped entirely.

He criticized Warken’s proposed reduction package, which only moderately raised the contribution assessment limit by €300, deeming this insufficient. He argued that under the current plan, the costs of the reform would largely be borne by the insured population. People would face higher costs for essential services such as medication, dental work, or spousal coverage, while wealthier individuals would simply shift their healthcare to private insurance. Van Aken dismissed the proposed “Contribution Rate Stabilization Act” as nothing more than “social robbery” orchestrated by Nina Warkens.

The Left Party leader insisted that the system needed to enforce contributions from all insured individuals. He called for a change away from cutting benefits and increasing costs for ordinary citizens, demanding that everyone-including self-employed professionals, politicians, and civil servants-begin paying into the statutory health insurance system.
