Political Pressure on DB: Opposition Cites Critical Shortcomings in Rail Renovation Planning

Transportation politicians from both the SPD and CDU have urged Deutsche Bahn (DB) to be more open about the challenges encountered during the renovation of railway lines. Following the completion of the track renovation between Berlin and Hamburg, SPD politician Anja Toff-Schaffarzyk stated to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that while there is relief over the end of detours, “we cannot ignore the grave weaknesses of this mammoth project.” She emphasized that the assessment reveals downsides that must be stated frankly, demanding that construction schedules and buffers for critical infrastructure be calculated to be more robust and resilient in the future.

Björn Simon, the Union’s transport policy spokesperson in the Bundestag, similarly called on the DB management to learn from the delays. He told newspapers that for upcoming corridor renovations, “we require reliable timetables and transparent communication that keeps the promises made to citizens.”
