Christos Pantazis, the SPD parliamentary group’s spokesperson for health policy, firmly opposes the complete removal of the €100,000 threshold for family caregivers. According to reports from the “Rheinische Post,” Pantazis argues that this limit on parental financial support represents a crucial achievement in social policy. It embodies the principle that the need for care should not result in children and relatives falling into financial distress.
The SPD politician warned that anyone seeking to eliminate this limit outright is unilaterally shifting the costs of care onto families, a solution he deemed neither socially balanced nor sustainable. He stressed that those affected would not only be high earners but also many families already managing the responsibilities of raising children, coping with high living costs, or providing comprehensive support to their relatives.
Pantazis acknowledged that local governments desperately need relief from the rising expenses associated with care assistance. However, he maintains that simply transferring financial responsibility to the next generation is not a viable solution. He views care as a collective societal duty that must be funded through solidarity.
Therefore, the SPD parliamentary group advocates for a care policy that provides security-for both those needing care and their caregivers-which is why they reject the unconditional abolition of the €100,000 limit. Pantazis concluded that “anyone who wants care to be future-proof must solve the structural financing questions, instead of asking families to contribute more.”
