Greens Demand Clarity and Conditions Before Endorsing German Military Action in Hormuz Strait

The Green Party in the Bundestag stated that they would only agree to a Navy mission by the German Armed Forces in the Strait of Hormuz under very specific conditions. Vice-faction leader Agnieszka Brugger told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that many crucial matters remain unresolved and are presented in contradictory ways by various sides. According to Brugger, the decisive framework needed for a responsible and final assessment of any possible Bundeswehr deployment in the Strait of Hormuz is still completely unclear. The Greens will not grant a blanket approval.

Brugger added that the Party faces more than just the important question of the legal basis for such an operation. They must also consider the concrete mandate in a situation that is currently extremely fragile and could quickly become very dangerous. She also noted that the current geopolitical climate is highly unpredictable, stating, “We know that if Donald Trump decides, tomorrow’s situation could look completely different from today.”

Concluding her remarks, Brugger reiterated that given the current international climate and such immense uncertainty, the Greens certainly will not give an unconditional “blank check” for a Bundeswehr mission, even as they commit to examining every mandate they receive responsibly.
