Consumer Group Slams EU Genetically Modified Decision, Calls for Federal Protection of Choice

The Federal Association of Consumer Advice Centers (VZBV) is strongly criticizing the European Union’s genetically engineered decision and is demanding that the German government take countermeasures. Christiane Seidel, the head of the food team at the VZBV, told the “Rheinische Post” that the decision constitutes a major setback for consumers. Without mandatory labeling for food produced using new genetic technology, consumers’ freedom of choice will be significantly restricted, as it will no longer be possible to identify whether a product was made using this technique. Furthermore, the decision contradicts the precautionary principle because many of these foods will not undergo a risk assessment or a formal approval process. The VZBV expert emphasized that the federal government is now required to ensure that the production of genetically non-modified food remains feasible.
