CDU’s Bayern Analogy: Kramp-Karrenbauer Links Party Dissatisfaction to Performance and Failure to Deliver Results

Former CDU Chairperson Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer attributes the dissatisfaction within the party primarily to unmet expectations. Speaking to Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Kramp-Karrenbauer emphasized that the CDU is a party fixated on results, suggesting the situation is akin to the FC Bayern Munich: they must secure championships.

The enormous expectations surrounding the new black-red government were built following the collapse of the “Ampel” coalition and the preceding period of political chaos. While acknowledging that there were initial difficulties, some unnecessary disputes, and only marginal progress, the former chair described these factors as leading to a degree of disappointment.

Kramp-Karrenbauer addressed the internal tensions, noting that as populist forces gain strength, some Christian Democrats feel compelled to strictly enforce the party line to appease their base. While reason dictates that a democracy and a coalition can only function through compromise, the party’s core often desires maximum autonomy in its programming. This pressure is even more acute within the SPD, which must grapple with its very existence. The underlying problem is that compromise is frequently maligned and portrayed as a sign of party weakness, even though, in fact, it is the societal adhesive.

Finally, she conceded that Friedrich Merz is objectively correct in his criticism of the reform backlog of recent years. “Historically, there have been reforms, but they were not comprehensive enough,” she stated, adding that the current pressure for change is markedly greater.
