Paraguay Edges Past Germany in World Cup Round of 16 After Penalty Shootout

Germany was eliminated from the World Cup after losing to Paraguay 4-3 in the penalty shootout. The match between the two teams ended 1-1 after both 90 and 120 minutes.

The game began with Germany showing clear technical superiority, yet they struggled significantly to put the ball into Paraguay’s goal. A major blow came in the 42nd minute when Paraguay scored the opening goal through Julio Enciso’s head, capitalizing on a moment of defensive lapse in the German backline. Matias Galarza managed a near-undisturbed cross, which Enciso finished perfectly.

Germany increased the pressure after halftime and was rewarded in the 54th minute when Kai Havertz headed home an equalizer following a precise cross from Florian Wirtz from the halfway line. Although the German team attempted to control the match, Paraguay maintained a compact defense, allowing few clear chances while proving dangerous whenever they seized opportunities.

The match proceeded into extra time, where Paraguay proved to be a tough opponent. In the 103rd minute, Tah headed the ball into the net from a corner kick, but the goal was disallowed after video review. The referee ruled that Anton had pushed and briefly brought the opposing keeper, Gill, to the ground while the ball was in play-a highly controversial decision.

Ultimately, Paraguay held the advantage during the penalty shootout. Both attempts by Havertz and Woltemade were saved by Paraguay’s keeper, Orlando Gill, while Tah’s shot sailed wide of the goal.

With this victory, Paraguay will advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the France versus Sweden match on July 4th at 11:00 PM German time in Philadelphia.
