Following the exit of the DFB national team from the World Cup, demands are rising for consequences within the association. Stephan Mayer, the political spokesperson for the Bundestag parliamentary group and a member of the CSU, has called for a critical investigation into the role of the coach.
Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Mayer emphasized that the German Football Association (DFB) must analyze its early round defeat with humility and take swift action. He stressed that the national team’s poor performance is not merely a severe disappointment, but a “veritable disgrace.” He also appealed to the public, urging the association to remember the many children and young people who have never seen the DFB squad deliver a convincing performance at a World Cup.
Beyond immediate reactions, Mayer also demanded a broader debate concerning fundamental structural issues within the organization. He argued that it is necessary to clarify why there is such a striking disparity between the sporting success achieved at the youth levels and the results delivered by the senior national team.
