Norway secured their place in the knockout stages after defeating Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 on Tuesday in the Round of 16 football World Cup match. The decisive late goal from Erling Haaland ensured Norway’s passage into the next round.
The match, played in Dallas, began as a close affair, with neither team producing many clear scoring chances. Despite having a slight advantage in field position, Côte d’Ivoire repeatedly threatened the Norwegian goal, largely through the dangerous incursions of Nicolas Pepe.
As the game progressed, Norway found its rhythm and earned the lead just before the break. Antonio Nusa, operating on the left flank, drove inside and scored a beautiful curling shot from approximately 14 meters out in the 39th minute, putting Norway 1-0 up. Erling Haaland nearly added to the lead immediately afterward, but his close-range effort was decisively blocked.
After halftime, Côte d’Ivoire took increased control of the tempo. An early attempt by Pepe was parried by the sharp-responding goalkeeper, Orjan Nyland. However, Norway subsequently gifted Ivorian chances. In the 67th minute, Amad Diallo saved a shot by Andreas Heggem on the goal line following a corner.
Shortly thereafter, the West Africans capitalized on their pressure. Nicolas Pepe delivered an excellent pass to Amad Diallo, who successfully broke through the defense and tapped the ball past Nyland in the 74th minute, leveling the score at 1-1.
The match appeared headed for extra time, but Norway responded again just four minutes before the end. Oscar Bobb supplied Patrick Berg on the right flank, whose cross found Erling Haaland, who finished neatly from close range in the 86th minute to make it 2-1.
Though Côte d’Ivoire pressed hard for an equalizer during the final minutes, the Norwegian defense held firm, conceding few clear opportunities. Even during stoppage time, Haaland managed an attempt at a third goal, but it sailed wide of the post. With this hard-fought victory, Norway advances to the quarter-finals where they will face Brazil.
