Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) stated that a significant number of soldiers will likely need to be conscripted for the establishment of the Federal Armed Forces brigade in Lithuania. While he indicated that under 1,000 individuals might eventually be called up, the minister noted that most military positions have been filled voluntarily so far. However, challenges remain regarding specialized personnel and enlisted ranks; if needs persist in those areas, conscription could become necessary.
Regarding the war against Russia, Pistorius conceded to the Ukrainian side some potential gains. When asked whether Kyiv is currently winning the conflict, he observed that “it has never looked like this before.” He noted that movement on the battlefield remains limited-only short advances or retreats-but these actions are accompanied by immense losses for Russian forces. Furthermore, he stressed that Ukraine is increasingly effective at striking targets within Russia itself, helping to destroy military logistics and refineries.
Looking ahead to the NATO summit beginning Tuesday, Pistorius announced further German financial assistance for Ukraine. He confirmed that Germany will provide the single largest contribution to this international aid package. Despite his commitment to help, however, he stated that a delivery of the Taurus cruise missile system to Kyiv is unnecessary, believing “Ukraine no longer needs the Taurus.”
Finally, commenting on the readiness of the Bundeswehr, the minister asserted that its military capability has improved compared to four years ago. Nevertheless, problems persist concerning the long lead times for weapons orders. While the defense industry is catching up, Pistorius emphasized that greater speed is required to ensure necessary equipment actually reaches troops in barracks or ports without delays.
