German Tourism Surpasses Record as Overnight Stays Climb in Spring Months

According to preliminary results released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Friday, accommodation providers in Germany reported 49.2 million overnights for both domestic and international guests in May 2026. This figure represents a 3.8 percent increase compared to May 2025.

In May alone, domestic guest nights rose by 4.6 percent year-on-year, reaching 41.7 million. Conversely, nights recorded by foreign guests saw a slight decrease of 0.5 percent, totaling 7.5 million.

Looking at the cumulative period from January through May 2026, accommodation providers successfully accounted for 175.1 million overnight stays. This total reflects a 1.3 percent increase compared to the same period last year, and also surpasses the previous record of 174.4 million nights set in the first five months of 2024.

For the January-to-May period, domestic guest nights grew by 1.6 percent relative to the 2025 figures, reaching 146.3 million. Meanwhile, overnight stays by foreign guests increased by 0.3 percent, amounting to 28.7 million nights, according to the Federal Office.
