US Strikes Iran Again Amid Escalating Naval Tensions in the Persian Gulf

The United States has launched another military strike against Iran. According to the relevant US Central Command, the third wave of attacks against Iran this week occurred on Sunday night, at 7:15 PM Eastern Time (1:15 AM German time and 2:45 AM Iranian time).

The US military action was specifically linked to an earlier Iranian attack on a merchant vessel in the Persian Gulf. The container ship M/V GFS Galaxy, sailing under Cypriot flag, was reportedly attacked while passing through the Strait of Hormuz. A civilian crew member is missing, and the ship was unable to continue its journey owing to a fire onboard and significant damage to the engine room.

The military statement emphasized that this move gave Iran another opportunity to uphold the terms of an agreement, following its previous accountability regarding attacks on commercial shipping. However, the statement concluded that Iran had again failed in its commitment. In response to the attacks, the United States imposed “a severe penalty” aimed at diminishing Iran’s capacity to target civilian mariners and commercial vessels. These operations were conducted under the instruction of then-US President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced through state media that the Strait of Hormuz had been closed following a warning shot fired at a vessel that had taken an unauthorized course.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated in recent days. This escalation followed a declaration by US President Donald Trump stating that the ceasefire had ended. Prior to this, there had been recurring reports of mutual violations of the agreement.
