Spain and Gibraltar Lift Border Controls, Embracing Schengen Zone and EU Market Principles

Border checks between Spain and the British exclave of Gibraltar concluded just after midnight on Wednesday, meaning that Schengen rules are now applicable for entry into Gibraltar. It is expected that the metal fence, which was erected in 1908, will be dismantled in the coming days.

Previously, the European Union and the United Kingdom reached an agreement in mid-June covering the core aspects of a deal concerning Gibraltar. This future agreement is designed to ensure the prosperity of the entire region by removing all physical barriers, checks, and inspections of people and goods between Spain and Gibraltar. Crucially, this process is intended to preserve the Schengen area, the EU single market, and the customs union.

Regarding commerce, negotiators agreed on the principles of a future customs union between the EU and Gibraltar. This commitment includes close cooperation between the respective customs authorities and the elimination of goods controls.

Traditionally, Spain maintains a claim to the territory, which has been under British control for over 300 years.
