Health Ministry Announces Tax-Free Austerity Measures to Fund Hospital Support

Federal Minister for Health, Nina Warken (CDU), has announced further austerity measures within the healthcare system to finance the €550 million that was recently promised to hospitals. According to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland,” the minister stated that she would present a proposal for counter-financing to cover the additional expenditure and discuss it with various parliamentary factions. She emphasized that there would be no increased burden on insured individuals or employers, assuring that contribution rates would remain stable in the coming years.

Warken acknowledged the criticism her austerity package has received from the healthcare industry, stating, “I can understand a degree of dissatisfaction.” Nevertheless, she maintained that the basic premise of the law-that health insurance can only spend what it collects-is logical. She pointed out that, among other measures, increases in remuneration will be capped.

Despite welcoming public scrutiny, she warned against alarmism among the public. The minister cautioned against fueling fears among patients, asserting that everyone shares a responsibility for the stability of the system and ultimately benefits from it. The CDU politician further argued that with daily expenditures amounting to around one billion euros, a reliable level of care must be ensured.
