BSW party leader Sahra Wagenknecht has called for the resignation of Jens Spahn, the CDU parliamentary group leader, amid the controversy surrounding surrogacy. Speaking to the news portal T-Online, Wagenknecht stated that the fact the parliamentary leader of the Chancellor’s party is traveling to the United States for baby shopping demonstrates his intolerable double standards. She concluded sharply, demanding that the man finally step down.
Wagenknecht noted that the debate extends far beyond Spahn’s personal decision to start a family. She described the development-where children have become commodities and pregnant bodies can simply be rented-as a shameful trend. She emphasized that this practice is prohibited in Germany for sound ethical reasons.
Furthermore, Wagenknecht accused Spahn of displaying hypocrisy not for the first time. She cited his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming he preached lockdowns while simultaneously holding CDU donor dinners with concealed financial backers. She also alleged that he severely damaged the federal budget through questionable mask deals, which made party friends into multi-millionaires, amounting to hundreds of millions of euros. Wagenknecht added that while Spahn has lived off taxpayer money in the Bundestag since he was 22, he tells German retirees to make sacrifices.
