Following extensive personnel changes within the CDU, SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch asserts that further internal reorganizations within his party are unnecessary. Speaking to Funke-Mediengruppe (Saturday editions), Miersch stated, “I believe that the SPD is currently well-positioned and is generating its own momentum in many areas. Therefore, I currently see no need for personnel debates.”
Miersch also dismissed the internal criticism regarding SPD leaders Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas holding ministerial posts as Finance and Labor, respectively. “I have known this discussion almost as long as I have been a member of the SPD. We have seen party chairpersons who were in the cabinet, and we have seen ones who were not,” the parliamentary leader said. “Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Given the massive challenges and the very difficult situation, the success of politics does not hinge only on individual people.”
Despite the fierce criticism from the CDU concerning the personnel decisions made by Chancellor and party chief Friedrich Merz, Miersch hopes that these changes will not spark further unrest. The SPD politician noted that Friedrich Merz himself had admitted that not everything had run perfectly recently. However, Miersch insists that everyone understands their responsibilities and is confident that the recent personnel decisions will bring greater stability back to the coalition.
