Amidst the federal government’s preparations for a new civil service program, Bundestag Vice President Bodo Ramelow (Die Linke) has advocated for a popular vote. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post,” he stated his position: “My stance is to establish a citizens’ council to develop suggestions for a better transition from school to the professional world. Subsequently, these proposals should undergo popular referendums so that people can decide, rather than reverting to old circumstances through a back door.”
Ramelow, however, criticized the government’s existing plans. He remarked that after the military requirement quietly returned, the government was now planning the reactivation of civil service. The Left party politician urged that instead of breaking away from the old compulsory military service, the strength of the society should be mobilized to conduct an honest and open debate on the issue.
The federal government’s planning is predicated on the possibility that general conscription will be reintroduced. Should this happen, an alternative service option would also have to be offered to those who refuse military duty.
