The campaign activities of actor Dieter Hallervorden for the CDU in Saxony-Anhalt are once again drawing internal criticism from the party. Dennis Thering, the CDU state chairman from Hamburg, told the “Tagesspiegel”: “It remains an open question how sensible it is for the CDU to market itself using Mr. Hallervorden’s sometimes radical theses.”
Hallervorden has recently engaged in several campaign appearances where he attacked Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze (CDU), and Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). Most recently, on Monday evening, he also targeted the new CDU General Secretary, Franziska Hoppermann-who had previously rejected his controversial, genocidal theses. During the CDU campaign in Dessau on Monday, Hallervorden stated: “There will still be everyone, even if Ms. Hoppermann is voted out.”
Thering, the CDU head from Hamburg, stressed the importance of Hoppermann clarifying the CDU’s stance on “principles,” asserting that there should be no debate on this matter.
Saxony-Anhalt will elect a new state parliament on September 6th, with current polls showing the AfD significantly ahead of the CDU. On Monday, Hallervorden proposed a coalition involving the CDU, SPD, and Greens, tolerating the Left party. He advised the CDU not to “joke with the Left,” arguing that the party would “probably need them for tolerance.” However, Schulze acknowledged the point of contention, stating that he is not “always one hundred percent in agreement” with Hallervorden.
