Irene Mihalic, the parliamentary manager for the Green Party’s Bundestag group, is urging for the procedures governing how authorities handle risk individuals within the Federal and State Joint Counterterrorism Center (GTAZ) to be made legally binding.
According to a report by Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Mihalic made this demand following a recent special session of the Bundestag Interior Committee. She stressed that the handling of individuals deemed a threat requires greater legal certainty in the GTAZ, which would ensure that it is unequivocally clear where specific information is routed and what conclusions can legitimately be drawn from it.
Mihalic further addressed the terrorist attack on the Breitscheidplatz in Berlin perpetrated by Anis Amri. She noted that although the perpetrator traveled across the entire republic, the core of the case unfolded in Berlin. In her view, this confined scope should have made coordinated responses and countermeasures significantly easier. She expressed profound confusion that, given the severity of the horrific act, the question of whether the Berlin Youth Assize Court received the relevant assessments regarding the future perpetrator’s level of risk remains unresolved.
