Given the rising number of drowning deaths this year, the German Federation of Swimming Instructors is issuing a warning against overestimating one’s own swimming abilities. Peter Harzheim, the federation’s president, told the “Rheinische Post”: “Even an experienced swimmer can quickly run into trouble with currents, such as those prevalent in the Rhine. Most victims overestimate their capabilities immensely.”
Harzheim further advised that people should never swim alone in rivers or lakes, but always go with a partner, ensuring that help can be rendered in an emergency. He also stressed the importance of checking in advance which bodies of water are safe for swimming.
Current statistics reveal that at least 261 people have died due to bathing and water accidents in Germany during the first seven months of this year. According to an interim report released by the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) on Thursday, this total is 15 people higher than the corresponding period last year.
