Following the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, the Opposition has demanded a session of the National Security Council. However, whether the federal government will comply with this request remains unclear for now.
A government spokesperson told the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Thursday that the National Security Council generally meets in secret. The spokesperson added that, depending on the circumstances, the council can decide to release information regarding individual meetings or specific decisions. She did not clarify whether a session is planned due to the events at Leipzig/Halle Airport, or even if one has already taken place.
Historically, the sessions of the body have always been announced only after they occur. Most recently, in early July, discussions covered topics including Ukraine and AI. The NSR was established in 2025 and includes various cabinet ministers, alongside permanent guests such as the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr and the heads of the intelligence agencies.
