The General Federal Prosecutor announced on Thursday that the investigation into the drone discovery at Leipzig/Halle Airport has been taken over from the Federal Prosecutor’s Office by the Dresden General Prosecutor’s Office, due to the critical nature of the case. The suspicion is that the attempt involved initiating a bomb explosion and constituting a dangerous interference with air traffic.
The incident occurred on the evening of August 4th, when a drone equipped with professional explosives and an igniter was found on the airport premises of Leipzig/Halle. As a result of this discovery, a cargo aircraft was forced to take off and subsequently collided in the air with an object presumed to be another drone.
The General Federal Prosecutor stated that this event represents a severe attack on Germany’s transport and logistics infrastructure, and it holds the potential to compromise the external and internal security of the Federal Republic. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has been appointed to handle the police investigation.
