The head of the Conference of Transport Ministers of the States (VMK), Christian Bernreiter, the responsible official for Bavaria (CSU), has voiced his support for the plans proposed by Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU). The plan involves temporarily lifting the ban on truck driving on Sundays and public holidays due to low water levels. Bernreiter told the “Rheinische Post” that this relaxation could be a valuable component in mitigating the impact of low water levels on federal waterways, describing the idea as a practical suggestion that should be seriously considered. He added that this measure could temporarily provide greater flexibility in the freight transport sector. However, Bernreiter stressed that in the medium term, the federal government must strengthen the waterways to handle low water situations and promote vessels suitable for such conditions. He noted that he had already discussed this issue with Federal Transport Minister Bilger on site along the Danube earlier this week.
