The Federal Ministry of Defence has defined the intended use for five properties that are earmarked for the new military service. The Ministry announced on Monday that concrete preliminary steps have been initiated for these sites. The properties include the former Kurpfalz barracks in Speyer, the former Unteroffizier-Krüger barracks in Kusel, the former Graf-Stauffenberg barracks in Sigmaringen, the former Kanaal-van-Wessem barracks in Soest, and the former Ray Barracks, which includes the former US training area in Ockstadt in Friedberg.
Discussions regarding the future use of the sites have already taken place in Speyer, Kusel, and Sigmaringen, involving various stakeholders. The outcomes of these talks are expected to be documented in intent declarations. Negotiations for the properties in Soest and Friedberg are still pending, although a meeting for the former Kanaal-van-Wessem barracks in Soest has been scheduled for September.
To successfully implement the planned training capacity, the necessary steps for the Federal Armed Forces to reuse the properties must be taken quickly. Crucially, this includes initiating the land acquisition procedure in the near future. The goal is for these properties to return to military use and be transferred into the possession of the Federal Ministry of Defence.
