Henning Otte, the Parliamentary Military Ombudsman, has issued a warning regarding potential issues arising from new equipment being introduced into the daily operations of Bundeswehr soldiers. Otte told the “Neue Berliner Redaktionsgesellschaft” that the increased size of personal gear has created difficulties when soldiers attempt to store their equipment. The lockers and storage facilities in the bases often prove insufficient to neatly and properly house the personal gear. Consequently, he argued that infrastructural requirements must keep pace with the introduction of new equipment.
While fundamentally welcoming the new equipment, Otte acknowledged its positive impact. He stated that the gear enhances soldiers’ protection, operational capability, and overall readiness, thereby directly contributing to the strengthening of the armed forces. However, he cautioned that the practical implications of these changes in day-to-day military life cannot be overlooked.
According to the Ombudsman, modern equipment and an up-to-date infrastructure are inextricably linked. He emphasized that both elements must be factored into planning and must be available to all soldiers.
