Germany’s Bilger Calls for Private Investment Boost to Revitalize National Infrastructure

Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) intends to draw more private investment into the repair of Germany’s infrastructure. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Wednesday, Bilger stated that the financing of infrastructure projects should not rely solely on public funds. “Public-private partnerships offer an additional instrument, and we need to utilize this more in the future,” he said.

Regarding potential toll charges on these types of roads, Bilger noted that previously, funds from the truck toll were used for specific sections of public-private partnerships. He explained that the new model involves the private operators receiving budgetary funds to cover the provision and maintenance of the autobahn sections. He views this as a sensible model that they intend to maintain.

The Minister also confirmed that the coalition has agreed to invest “significant funds” to put the infrastructure “back in shape.” Bilger emphasized that the focus for him remains on ensuring the implementation of these funds.
