While acknowledging that necessary “hard decisions” must be made within the coalition with the Union, especially “given the state’s financial situation,” Klüssendorf told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland. He stressed that the SPD must clearly articulate its positions on topics such as affordable living, secure pensions, and genuine tax fairness, and must take responsibility for these issues within the coalition government. The General Secretary promised that the party is working hard to maintain this distinct profile despite the inevitable decisions taken in the federal government. His goal, he added, is to “tirelessly and steadfastly rebuild trust, piece by piece, with a clear social-democratic attitude.” Klüssendorf clarified that unity in a coalition does not mean hiding differences; rather, it means finding “reliable compromises” and implementing them together, even when starting from divergent positions. He reinforced his push for an inheritance tax reform and advocated for capping fuel prices. Given the current high petrol costs, he argued that it is the role of politicians to “finally stand up to the oil corporations.”
