According to a recent study, Germany enjoys a generally favorable reputation across various Arab nations. Specifically, Germany is viewed positively with an approval rating of 73 percent, particularly in Syria, followed closely by Tunisia, which registered 70 percent. Furthermore, a relative majority in Syria (27 percent) considers Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to be the European head of government with the most astute Middle East policy. These findings stem from a study commissioned by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and reported by the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (FAZ).
Regarding which country poses the greatest threat to the region, Israel was most frequently named by relative majorities in Lebanon (67%), Jordan (62%), Syria (57%), Tunisia (45%), the Palestinian territories (41%), and Egypt (40%).
Meanwhile, support for a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict appears to be declining among younger generations. In the Palestinian territories, only about one-third of respondents under the age of 30 endorsed such a model, compared to 62 percent of those over the age limit.
The survey, which was conducted between May 8 and July 3, 2026, took place in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. During this period, 8,475 individuals (approximately 1,200 per country) were polled via telephone regarding their political views, economic expectations, and regional and international issues.
