Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) has rejected calls to extend the driving and mandatory rest periods for truck drivers. Despite the recent relaxation of Sunday driving bans in several federal states, Bilger stated to RTL and ntv that there would be “no change,” even though the proposal originated with the logistics companies. He emphasized that the situation of professional drivers must be considered, adding, “They have a tough job.”
The demand for greater flexibility stems from the necessity of maintaining supply during Sundays to avoid feared shortages. Nevertheless, Bilger stressed that driver welfare must be a central factor in these discussions. However, he confirmed that the ministry is currently reviewing all suggestions, including those presented by companies during a recent high-level meeting held in Bonn. Bilger concluded by stating that the focus of the ministry is currently on addressing what can be accomplished in the short term, often in close collaboration with the regional governments.
