Werder Bremen will forego midfielder Romano Schmid heading into the new season. The Austrian international is leaving the club immediately to join Serie A newcomer Frosinone Calcio, the club announced on Wednesday.
Clemens Fritz, Werder Bremen’s Football Director, noted that Schmid had become a vital part of the team in recent years and had strongly identified with the club, the city, and the fans. However, he stated that “Frosinone Calcio submitted an offer that suits both our economic interests and Romano’s personal desires.”
Schmid himself emphasized that his time in Bremen would always hold a “special place” in his life. He reflected on his experiences, including witnessing the club’s relegation and subsequent promotion, noting that he matured into a national team player while there. He also shared that the birth of his first son took place in Bremen. For him, this move now represented the chance to play in a country he had always wished for.
Schmid first signed a contract with Werder Bremen in January 2019 and was subsequently loaned out to Wolfsburger AC for a year and a half. He made his debut for Werder in the Bundesliga in December 2020 and has since made 192 official appearances, scoring 18 goals. In 2022, he celebrated the club’s promotion to the Bundesliga and soon afterward debuted for the Austrian national team, where he scored the 1-0 goal against Jordan in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.
