A spokesperson for the Foreign Office stated on Wednesday that Germany stands by the affected population in this catastrophe. The immediate focus of the German aid will be on ensuring basic supplies for affected residents. Colombian authorities have requested assistance, particularly because many people lost their homes, leading to shortages of drinking water and food.
In response, Germany is preparing relief supplies for the affected families. Discussions are underway with other European countries to figure out the fastest way to transport these goods to Colombia. Furthermore, financial support for the Colombian Red Cross is also being considered.
However, concerning the search for survivors, Colombia is currently relying solely on its own forces. The government announced that it does not require immediate foreign assistance for the acute search and rescue operations. Nevertheless, the Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed that if the situation changes, Germany is prepared to examine additional joint aid measures.
The earthquake occurred on Monday morning, reaching a magnitude of 7.4. Its epicenter was located approximately 60 kilometers west of the major city of Pereira. Latest reports indicate that more than 250 people have died, with several thousand others injured.
