Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is reportedly still on vacation next week. According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Sebastian Hille, who told the dts news agency on Wednesday, there will be no cabinet meeting during this time.
The cabinet is scheduled to resume regular sessions the following week, specifically on August 26th-and the Chancellor will be leading these meetings. Hille added that this should be expected. If Merz does not return sooner than planned, he would have been absent for a full four weeks.
The Chancellor’s office traditionally keeps the exact details of his vacations confidential for security reasons, meaning that the true extent of his absence is only understood in small snippets. His last public appearance was on July 29th, following the discharge and appointment of ministers and a special session of the Union faction. At that time, the federal press office stated that the Chancellor was attempting “to relax for a few days,” but also noted that he was “naturally always on duty.”
