Global Markets Drag DAX Down as Euro Strengthens Amid Mixed Sector Performance

The DAX managed to hold steady for most of the day on Thursday, only dipping into negative territory in the final minutes of trading. At the close of Xetra, the index stood at 26,300 points in the Frankfurt Stock Exchange hall, representing a slight decline of 0.1 percent from the previous day. This movement was partly driven by the developments in the US stock markets, which quickly dipped after opening during the afternoon in German time.

The individual stocks within the DAX showed a mixed picture throughout the day. On the rising side, utility companies and healthcare stocks stood out. RWE led the gainers shortly before the close with an increase of around three percent, while Qiagen added two percent to its value.

Conversely, automotive and insurance companies dominated the losses. Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Daimler Truck each saw declines of about one percent before the trading session ended. BASF performed particularly weakly, with its stock trading over two percent lower in the afternoon compared to the previous day.

The banking sector displayed a mixed performance, despite negative news released by the European Central Bank (ECB). The ECB published new data indicating that European banks are preparing for potentially more difficult periods in securing funding. Analysts anticipate that these costs could continue to rise next year, a trend that may not solely be attributed to higher interest rates.

In currency markets, the Euro strengthened slightly on Thursday afternoon. One Euro cost 1.1534 US dollars, meaning that a dollar could be obtained for 0.8670 Euros.
