Author Sebastian Fitzek Urges Smartphone Ban in Bedrooms Amid Digital Danger Concerns

In reaction to growing screen time and the pressure of constant availability, bestselling author Sebastian Fitzek has issued a warning about the dangers of mobile phones, strongly advocating for a strict digital fast within the bedroom. Fitzek told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” that the issue is serious, comparing books to chocolate-something that, while not always healthy, is generally harmless-while classifying modern mobile phones differently. “It’s like comparing chocolate to crack,” he stated, noting that the situation with smartphones differs significantly from reading.

The 54-year-old author, who has sold over 21 million books worldwide since 2006, described the smartphone as an “absolute time killer” and demands specific changes in daily life, namely: “Phones must be out of the bedroom!” He also revealed that an initial research consultation with a therapist unexpectedly turned into a discussion about his own addictive tendencies. Initially, he sought information on how treatment works, but the therapist pressed him to address a real issue, leading them to discuss his phone addiction.

Shifting focus to other areas of life, Fitzek expressed no enthusiasm for expensive automobiles. He mentioned that their current family car is a Kia Sorento, emphasizing that it is safe for children and costs only a fraction of other vehicles. Since he and his wife do not make a big deal out of cars, their second vehicle is a Mini. However, he concluded by stating his commitment to the future of transport: “I know one thing: the next car will be electric.”
