Agricultural Minister Alois Rainer of the CSU expressed concern regarding the consequences of extreme drought and offered compensation to affected farmers. The CSU politician told the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” that the persistent drought is already severely pressuring many farms. Behind the withered fields and scarce feed supplies are families worried about their harvests, the welfare of their livestock, and the future of their holdings.
Rainer stated that the actual extent of the damage will be assessed in late August, based on official harvest data, and that the necessary steps will be initiated in cooperation with the federal states. Furthermore, he reported that during the Federal Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, he briefed colleagues on the alarming situation currently facing fields and pastures across Germany, emphasizing that “we must be prepared across different government departments.”
