The Ministry of Defense intends to plan approximately 100 more major procurement projects in the second half of 2026. Each of these projects is slated to exceed 25 million euros and requires approval from the Bundestag (German Parliament) by September.
According to internal documents cited by “Welt am Sonntag”, 100 such projects were planned for the entirety of 2025. Forecasts suggest that this number could rise to nearly 150 for 2026 and up to 170 for 2027. For the current year, the majority of the roughly 150 planned major projects have yet to be forwarded to the parliament.
These projects affect all branches and areas of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr). A significant focus is placed on ammunition procurement. Specific projects and improvements planned include new initiatives for Eurofighter, F-35, Patriot, Iris-T, the Boxer armored vehicle, the armament of the Heron TP drone, as well as equipment for the Navy, space reconnaissance, and military infrastructure. New agreements with the USA are also on the agenda. Note that the exact content and figures are subject to change based on future planning. The Ministry stated that, before parliamentary review, it does not comment on planned acquisition projects.
As of the summer recess, 44 major projects totaling nearly 19 billion euros had been executed. Furthermore, “Welt am Sonntag” reported that by the beginning of August, the Ministry of Defense had issued almost 6,400 contracts overall, including smaller initiatives.
