Following Chancellor’s Minister Nina Warken (CDU), the Social Democrats (SPD) are also pressing for the swift implementation of the intelligence service reform approved by the Cabinet. SPD parliamentary spokesman Dirk Wiese told the “Rheinische Post” (Monday edition) that the reform of the intelligence services is “necessary and required due to the current threat situation.” He emphasized that reliance cannot always be placed on the timely contribution of friendly foreign services, adding that it must be acknowledged that Russia is already waging a hybrid war on European soil. Earlier, Warken had told “Bild am Sonntag” that the legislative process should be finalized by the end of the year. She stated that the agencies will subsequently and quickly use their new powers “for the safety of all of us.”
